I am so excited to announce that I will be heading to Costa Rica on March 6th to work with Nature and Oceans of the Americas with my mentor Marta Fabregas! Below is NOA's statement:
"Nature and Oceans of the Americans is a non-profit organization that manages conservation projects in Central America and has different expeditions where participants (students and volunteers) experience and take an active roll in this experiential education and at the same time contribute to raise the data for the NOA's conservation projects and then help to protect marine and terrestrial biodiversity."
I am extremely excited about this opportunity because I want to pursue marine science and especially marine conservation. Conserving the ocean environment is a MAJOR priority for me. I have been in contact with Marta for a few months now and I am so excited for what NOA has in store for me! The first two weeks, I will be staying at a permaculture farm with a local family that lead a sustainable and healthy life with the environment always in mind. This will be such an amazing experience because there isn't a lot of opportunities to live and experience a permaculture farm up close and personal. I will be communicating and interacting with the family members and be traveling with Fernando, a documentary film maker. He and I will work together to create a film to publish onto NOA's website and hopefully that I will be able to bring back to Animas and showcase. While I am staying at the farm, I will also be participating in an educational component of the internship. I will be going into local schools and interacting with the kids and teachers there and teach about World Peace (which I have tons of knowledge on from the World Peace Conference!), and about ocean conservation. My task is to find games that promote teamwork (if we are separated, we can't grow, if we work together, we can succeed) and lesson plans! This will also help greatly with my Spanish speaking skills, I am hoping that being surrounded by the language will help to improve my Spanish!
One of the great benefits of traveling far for my internship is that I will be surrounded by land and territory that is foreign to me - an excellent opportunity to further explore the world around me! During the internship, I will be hiking and interacting with the native cultures in Costa Rica - which will be the experience of a lifetime!
For the second half of my expedition, I will be traveling with Marta to a biological sea turtle reserve where I will participate in ongoing research projects - including how global warming is affecting the sea turtle nesting season. I will get to interact with the researchers there and learn more about marine conservation and my field of interest. I will also develop and create my own research project which I will study while I am at the biological reserve! I am so grateful for this opportunity and extremely excited for it to be underway and to tell everyone more about it once it starts!
