link Internship
I will be posting weekly updates on my blog for anyone who would like to read about my experiences in Costa Rica working alongside the people of Nature and Oceans of the Americas! Since I will be in Costa Rica for four weeks instead of three, I will be posting four updates! I hope you enjoy!
project
For my project, I wanted to focus on the expression of gratitude. I took so much away from my internship, but most of all I gained a new appreciation in life. I combined this with my Happiness and Meaning Project in Humanities as well, this gave me the chance to express myself and the new insight I gained while on my internship! This is combining most of the footage I took in Costa Rica and some that I took here. On the side note, I am also creating videos for NOA to post to their website to promote their projects - I will share the link to those once those are finished.
WHERE I AM HEADED
I am so excited to announce that I will be heading to Costa Rica on March 6th to work with Nature and Oceans of the Americas with my mentor Marta Fabregas! Below is NOA's statement:
"Nature and Oceans of the Americans is a non-profit organization that manages conservation projects in Central America and has different expeditions where participants (students and volunteers) experience and take an active roll in this experiential education and at the same time contribute to raise the data for the NOA's conservation projects and then help to protect marine and terrestrial biodiversity."
I am extremely excited about this opportunity because I want to pursue marine science and especially marine conservation. Conserving the ocean environment is a MAJOR priority for me. I have been in contact with Marta for a few months now and I am so excited for what NOA has in store for me! The first two weeks, I will be staying at a permaculture farm with a local family that devotes their life to living sustainably and with the environment always in mind. This will be such an amazing experience because there isn't a lot of opportunities to live and experience a permaculture farm up close and personal. I will be communicating and interacting with the family members and be traveling with Fernando, a documentary film maker. He and I will work together to create a film to publish onto NOA's website and hopefully that I will be able to bring back to Animas and showcase. While I am staying at the farm, I will also be participating in an educational component of the internship. I will be going into local schools and interacting with the kids and teachers there and teach about World Peace (which I have tons of knowledge on from the World Peace Conference!), and about ocean conservation. My task is to find games that promote teamwork (if we are separated, we can't grow, if we work together, we can succeed) and lesson plans! This will also help greatly with my Spanish speaking skills, I am hoping that being surrounded by the language will help to improve my Spanish!
One of the great benefits of traveling far for my internship is that I will be surrounded by land and territory that is foreign to me - an excellent opportunity to further explore the world around me! During the internship, I will be hiking and interacting with the native cultures in Costa Rica - which will be the experience of a lifetime!
For the second half of my expedition, I will be heading to a biological sea turtle reserve where I will participate in ongoing research projects - including how global warming is affecting the sea turtle nesting season. I will get to interact with the researchers there and learn more about marine conservation and my field of interest. I will also develop and create my own research project which I will study while I am at the biological reserve! I am so grateful for this opportunity and extremely excited for it to be underway and to tell everyone more about it once it starts!

LINK INTERNSHIP
"At Animas High School in Durango, Colorado, all juniors complete an intensive internship in the first three weeks of March, during which time they do not attend classes. The Leading Internships for New Knowledge (LINK) program is an integral piece of the AHS curriculum, as it exemplifies our belief in the value of student-centered, personalized instruction that connects learning to the adult world. LINK takes students beyond the classroom walls in order to clarify personal, college and career goals while teaching invaluable professional skills and life lessons.
With support from the LINK Program Coordinator, students find internships either locally or further afield that allow them to dive deeply into their individual passions, interests and potential career paths. They are paired with LINK Mentors who generously share their time, energy and expertise. While on their internships, AHS juniors make meaningful contributions to their host businesses and organizations while also completing individual LINK Projects. LINK internships culminate with the LINK Exhibition, which is open to families, mentors and the community at large.
WHAT IS LINK?
